Two weeks ago I was at the Palm house to look if it was possible to use the place for a photo session with model and YES it was as a paradise on earth, a perfect place for my artificially plastic jewellery that have the most inspiration from the nature. It was a cold sunny day and the atmosphere indoors almost hit me to want to cry over the silence, the warm and lovely rooms with al exotic plants, a stone throw from all the alarming city noises. I can recommend a trip to the garden Society, it’s is free of charge, this paradise place in the middle of the town is for free.
The Garden Society
Just a stones throw from the central station lies the Garden Society of Gothenburg. This is one of the best preserved 19th century parks in Europe, and is honoured by the Michelin Guide.
The Garden Society has plenty to offer for all the family - daily walks in the park, concerts, traditional festivities and theatre for the youngest members of the family.
The Horticultural GardensIn the middle of the 19th Century, gardening became more and more popular in Europe. Many new species were introduced from other parts of the world and plant breeding developed strongly. Horticultural associations were formed in many places in Sweden. The Garden Society of Gothenburg was founded in 1842 and is today one of the best preserved 19th Century parks in Sweden. It was declared a building monument in 1992.
The purpose of founding the gardens had two main objectives: to promote the spreading of horticulture and to create a popular meeting place. The Garden Society was one of Sweden’s leading plant nurseries at that time and, in order to promote social life, there were a number of bandstands, Schweizerei (a café licensed to sell wines and spirits) and other small houses.
Horticulture and bringing people together are just as important today. Here, you will find a very diverse range of plants with among other things, a Rose Garden, exotic plants in the Palmhouse, an impressive collection of trees, perennials and annuals, as well as an agave and a cactus planting. Restaurants and cafés, musical arrangements, theatrical performances, seminars, seasonal parties and many other things make the park hustle and bustle throughout the year.
The Palmhouse
The Palmhouse appeared in Gothenburg in 1878 like a gigantic puzzle made of cast iron and glass. In this splendid building of almost 1,000 m² you will be bewitched by natural beauty from all corners of the world.
The Palmhouse building contains five sections with different climates: the Camellia house, the Mediterranean house, the Palmhouse, the Tropical house and the Water house which contains the Giant Water Lily, grown from seed each year, and a fine collection of bromeliads.
